“La Pacchiana, Fierezza, Preghiera e Lavoro”


L’opera nasce per omaggiare le tradizioni del popolo lametino, con particolare riferimento al costume tipico in uso dal 1600 fino alla metà del secolo scorso.
Costume, che tranne le poche signore appartenenti alla nobiltà, indossato tutte le donne e le ragazze intorno ai quattordici, quindici anni, che realizzavano loro stesse e al contempo facevano parte della dote donando più valore alle figlie femmine.
Indossarlo, segnava il passaggio dall’infanzia all’età adulta che fino all’Ottocento era un vero e proprio rito, che si svolgeva in tutte le famiglie, insieme a parenti e amici in occasione delle feste di Natalizie, Pasquali o dei Santi Patroni, era considerato una presentazione in società della ragazza che ormai era pronta per convogliare a nozze.
Nei comuni di Sambiase e Nicastro ora Lamezia Terme grazie all’unificazione dei tre comuni avvenuta il 1968, era da sottolineare la cura, lo sfarzo dei costumi altamente elaborati con ricami, pizzi e merletti, che unitamente all’originalissima “fadiglia” o più comunemente “a cuda”, la coda, per la quale erano necessari da quattordici a sedici metri di stoffa, con una ricchissima plissettatura a nido d’ape, rendevano il costume unico ed affascinante.
La caratteristica più importante delle pacchiane lametine, era la loro propensione al sacrificio, erano instancabili lavoratrici, che non si risparmiavano dal lavoro dei campi, a lavare i panni al fiume e al contempo accudire la famiglia, con una particolare devozione alla preghiera, tenendo un contegno serio e dignitoso, che con la grazia e maestosità del loro portamento, erano la massima espressione della bellezza calabra. Da questa premessa nasce il titolo dell’opera:
“La Pacchiana, Fierezza. Preghiera e Lavoro”.
La Fierezza è data dalla postura, dallo sguardo attraente e profondo, dal sorriso appena accennato che nasconde un certo riserbo.
La Preghiera è data dal Coroncina del Rosario che custodisce avvolta al polso e stretta nella mano sinistra.
Il Lavoro è espresso dalla “vozza”, un altro simbolo della civiltà calabra e lametina, che consisteva in un contenitore in terracotta che serviva ad attingere, trasportare e bere l’acqua.
Lo sfondo dell’opera ricalca il paesaggio tipico degli uliveti e dei campi lametini, dove sono ancora presenti le cosiddette “muraglie”, realizzate in pietra naturale, con una particolare predominanza di sfumature verdastre, tipiche delle pietre provenienti dal Monte Reventino, nei pressi delle quali trovano attecchimento le tipiche piante di fico d’india.
In quest’opera, si esalta l’effetto cromatico, la nostra Pacchiana è immersa in un cielo “spatolato”, con sfumature azzurre, celesti e rosse, tonalità che richiamano il particolare clima, rovente d’estate e mite d’inverno, lo straordinario prato di papaveri sottolinea una terra che da sempre si colora di tinte vivaci, dal rosso della passione, al giallo del sole, al bianco della genuinità del suo popolo ed al verde della montagna e della pianura e della speranza.
In opera dedicata alla tradizione e alla cultura del popolo lametino, non poteva mancare il Bastione di Malta stilizzato all’orizzonte, emblema della città di Lamezia Terme.

Description of the artwork "La Pacchiana, pride, prayer and work." The work was created to pay homage to the traditions of the Lamezia people, with particular reference to the typical costume in use from 1600 until the middle of the last century. Costume, which except for a few ladies belonging to the nobility, was worn by all women and girls around the age of fourteen, fifteen, who made it themselves and at the same time it was an integral part of their dowry giving more value to their daughters. Wearing it marked the passage from childhood to adulthood, which until the nineteenth century was a real ritual, which took place in all families, together with relatives and friends on the occasion of Christmas, Easter or Patron Saints, it was considered a presentation in society of the girl who was now ready to be married. In the municipalities of Sambiase and Nicastro, now Lamezia Terme, thanks to the unification of the three municipalities in 1968, it was worth highlighting the care and magnificence of the highly elaborate costumes with embroidery, lace and frills, which together with the very original "fadiglia" or more commonly "a cuda", the tail, for which fourteen to sixteen metres of fabric were needed, with a very rich honeycomb pleating, made the costume unique and fascinating. The most important characteristic of the pacchiane lametine was their propensity for sacrifice, they were tireless workers, who did not spare themselves from working in the fields, washing clothes in the river and at the same time taking care of the family, with a particular devotion to prayer, maintaining a serious and dignified demeanor, which with the grace and majesty of their bearing, were the maximum expression of Calabrian beauty. From this premise the title was born of the work: "La Pacchiana, pride, prayer and work". Pride is given by the posture, by the attractive and deep look, by the slight smile that hides a certain reserve Prayer is given by the Rosary Chaplet that she keeps wrapped around her wrist and held in her left hand. Work is expressed by the "vozza", another symbol of the Calabrian and Lametina civilization, which consisted of a terracotta container that was used to draw, transport and drink water. The background of the work follows the typical landscape of the olive groves and fields of Lamezia Terme, where the so-called "muraglie" are still present, made of natural stone, with a particular predominance of greenish shades, typical of the stones coming from Monte Reventino, near which the typical prickly pear plants take root. In this work, the chromatic effect is enhanced, our Pacchiana is immersed in a "spatula-like" sky, "with shades of blue, light blue and red, tones that recall the particular climate, scorching in summer and mild in winter, the extraordinary poppy field underlines a land that has always been colored with bright hues, from the red of passion, to the yellow of the sun, to the white of the genuineness of its people and to the green of the mountains and the plains and of hope. In a work dedicated to the tradition and culture of the Lamezia people, the Bastion of Malta stylised on the horizon, emblem of the city of Lamezia Terme, could not be missing.
