Pride VS Slavery
art digital, 2025
????Warning????: This digital artwork contains scenes of slavery and blood, which may not be suitable for sensitive audiences. Viewer discretion is advised. This piece depicts two extremely contrasting sides. On the left, there is an anthropomorphic panther, caged and imprisoned, draped with the Jamaican flag, symbolizing the slave trade during the British colonial era. On the right, a proud albino lion, a commander of the Redcoats, stands tall, having recently emerged from battle, with a large stain of blood marking its fur. These two felines are exemplary and significant; the Redcoat commander represents the white lion, reflecting the British symbol of power. Generals often wore wigs, a fashion of the time, while Redcoat soldiers typically bound their hair with a black linen bow. The commanders, however, frequently preferred wigs to avoid lice—though in this particular case, the lion has been depicted without one.The panther symbolizes the enslaved Black individuals who were subjected to negotiation with slave traders. However, it is far from being a liberator of slavery; rather, it embodies the struggle for vengeance against past injustices. Notably, the lion has a prosthetic right arm, illustrating the reality of a veteran's experience—an embodiment of both pride and the harsh realities of war. This artwork invites reflection on the complex interplay of power, identity, and the legacy of colonialism.
